It’s coming! Sunday September 30, 2007 is the biggest one-day literary event in Canada. If you are in or around Toronto, Vancouver or Kitchener, don’t miss my favorite carnival of words. This is Word on the Street’s 18th year. Expect 175 book, magazine, and literacy exhibits. Book deals, live concerts and activities for all ages typically draw over 200,000 visitors.
It takes me most of a day to explore the booths, eat a cob of corn or two and buy as many books as I can carry. It’s a good place to get autographs and meet the people behind literary magazines, small presses and writing associations. Panels and discussions are held in pavilions around the site.
In Toronto, my city, festival hours are 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. I attend rain or shine, in sickness and in health, with family and friends or alone.
Calgary, Vancouver and Kitchener, Ontario are hosting Word on the Street celebrations on September 30. Halifax holds WOTS on September 23, 2007. For more info, including maps and events, consult Word on the street.
And for Scarborough residents who would normally use the subway to get down there (like, say, ME), keep in mind that Kennedy and Warden stations will be closed that weekend. There will be a “frequent shuttle bus service” between Kennedy and Victoria Park, but it will take that much longer to get there.
How wonderful! I love the title of this festival. Toronto hosts so many fun activities. You’re lucky to live there where you can take advantage of them. Will look forward to hearing about your purchases and your day.
Carol: What a shame. Parking downtown is no fun, even on the weekend. I usually take the GO Train to Word on the Street.
Booklogged: Thanks. I do love my town. Now if we would only stop charging tax on book purchases… I grew up buying food and books tax free. You know, the necessities of life. 😉
CG, I’m so disappointed I am not going to be able to make to the “Word on the Street” this year, but I am so glad you are going, I’ll get to see the festival through you!
Cereal girl: I have no intention of parking downtown! I’m not all that far from a GO station. It’s just that Union Station isn’t as convenient a drop-off point as the subway station is.
You know, they should stop charging Canadians $2 or so extra on books and magazines now that there’s not much difference between our dollars. And no book tax either!
I’ve tagged you for a middle name meme. The rules are here. I also nominated you for the Nice Blogger Award.
Just got your message today! Many thanks for the nomination.
As for the meme, I’ll have to sleep on it. Maybe I’ll dream up an appropriate middle name.
