(Maaja Wentz’s creative writing with links and descriptions)

Witches — necromancers — inappropriate table manners!

The three-hundred-year-old town of Loon Lake looks calm as a pond, but below the surface, clans of witches and wizards clash like hungry sharks.

First-year student Tonya isn’t privy to her family’s darkest secrets, but when campus is overrun by a deadly eating epidemic, only she can resist the hidden, mind-controlling entity behind it.

Meanwhile, Tonya’s new friends, artist Priya, and Digital Ninjas Drake and Zain, want to create the creepiest art installation Loon Lake Cemetery will ever know. Too bad what’s lurking in the graveyard is deadly.

Untrained and overmatched by occult conspirators, Tonya will need to develop magical abilities she never knew she had. Can she uncover the mystery behind the epidemic and save her town?

Winner of the coveted Watty Award, supernatural thriller Feeding Frenzy is a witch’s brew of intrigue with a dollop of comedy, a teaspoon of romance, and a pinch of horror.

Kid’s Stuff

Maaja Wentz publishes creative writing for kids under the pen name Apricot Banks. Hubert is a tiny hermit crab and wannabe spy persevering in a dangerous ocean. He and his fishy friends at saltwater spy school must overcome getting lost, stormy seas, bullies, and pearl-thieving divers. It was a hoot writing these books and adding bonus jokes, games, and riddles kids can enjoy after the story.

Medium

Some of my posts are only on Medium. I started writing there as a creative outlet one summer after reading plenty of Medium articles about AI, Crypto, and the future of life and commerce. Anybody can blog about anything on Medium, although discoverability is not guaranteed. Popular topics include writing, finance, business, self-improvement, technology, science, and the future. Wired magazine covers many of these topics in investigative depth, but the heartfelt and opinionated Medium posts charm me, too. It’s a bit like social media for bloggers.

Anthologies

“Fallow God” in the Urban Green Man Anthology

“Wild Caving” in the Amprosia Anthology.

Wattpad Serial Fiction & Fact

Serial fiction on Wattpad allowed me to experiment and grow in front of a growing and appreciative audience. In 2024, I’m returning to Wattpad with new creative writing projects. Having the accountability and feedback from Wattpad readers will ensure I stretch my creative muscles on the third book in the Loon Lake Magic series. Writing for nearly immediate reader response inspires me to take chances and keep up the suspense.

Cliffhanger Castle

Cliffhanger Castle, was a serial anthology experiment, and the first story of its kind on Wattpad. This shared world was based on a real abandoned historic hotel which sparked intriguing chapters by various collaborators.

Creative non-Fiction

I Wish My Teacher Knew, is a collection of non-fiction stories about school, written by teens and adults. The idea is to collect first-person accounts of positive and negative school experiences to inform my writings on Creativity in Education. If you would like to add your own personal experiences, your submission is welcome.

Hi Maaja. It was lovely meeting you at Newmarket recently. I took a few photos of your reading. They aren’t terribly clear but in case no one else got pics, better than nothing. If you shoot me an email, I’ll forward them on to you. Am reading Feeding Frenzy now, and enjoying the heck out of it. Love the characters and setting!
